The Fairy Tale Tarot

I have been wanting to get a new tarot deck since quite a while. I know i just bought the Legacy of the Divine Tarot but recently I came across this wonderful deck which is so cute, at the same time so insightful, that I couldn't resist. It's the Fairy Tale Tarot by Lisa Hunt. There's also another Fairytale Tarot, but that one didn't intrigue me. This deck is made up of 78 fairy tales for the 78 cards, and each card is so different and unique. I have been reading up on Jung and archetypes, and plan to use some of those aspects in my Ph.D., so I couldn't resist the similarities between my topic of interest and these cards which clearly speak about myths and archetypes present in the tarot. I always felt that Tarot and Fairy tales are two great holders of archetypes and symbols, and to fuse them into one is just brilliant. Some of the cards that I love are Innocence, Entrapment and Transformation. Innocence shows 'Little Red Riding Hood' going through the forest, Entrapment shows 'Rapunzel' in her tower and Transformation shows the actual transformation of the beast in 'Beauty and the Beast'. The book along with it is like a wonderful storybook telling all the 78 stories which are included in the deck.

One of the reasons I love this deck is because fairy tales remind us to keep it simple and teach us to be a child at heart. I always loved them as a child, so that doesn't mean I'll forget about them and stop reading them now that I'm grown up! I still have my entire stash of fairy tale stories, and plan to read them to my kids someday, and they will read it to their's. I have pre-ordered my deck, so I should be receiving it in 15 days. In this deck, the Number 13 card is Transformation which could be the equivalent of the Death card. The card shows a figure sitting on a vast flower holding the symbols of transformation - the snake that sheds its skin, the yin/yang symbol of duality and the broken chain of limitations. One of its hands are open and receptive. The other hand is reaching down to touch a sleeping face, symbolizing the silence that comes when we are at rest. This is a time for a deep let-go. Be like Gautama Buddha who after much searching realized that there is nothing more he could do. That very night, he became enlightened. Transformation is like  death, it comes in its own time. And, like death it takes you from one dimension to the other.

Cancerians are very moody people. They love the moon and love to dream and imagine under the moonlight. The Cancerian's passing moods are like the different phases of the moon- sometimes they can be bright like a full moon, or sometimes dull with a faint shimmer. Yet, the moon actually never changes, we just think that it does because it appears to. The Cancerian too is the same person- he is dependable and constant.

You can recognize him with his 'crazy lunar laugh' which is very contagious. When he's in a good mood, he can be the life of the party. He loves jokes and laughs loudly at every single one of them. He is never shallow or superficial. They secretly enjoy attention and soak up all the praises they get. On the other hand, when Cancer is in a depressed or sad mood, beware of him. Self Learning OR Tarot Classes?

 Do we have it in us to learn the tarot all by ourself or do we need professional help?

Tarot is a self-realising tool, but some guidance is always welcome in the early stages. I entered the world of tarot when I was just 14. I first experienced tarot when my aunt did a reading for me. I was a big fan of Linda Goodman’s books and was fascinated by astrology and numerology. So I thought this was another thing that was ‘cool’ that I could learn to do. I borrowed a couple of books from my aunt and bought a tarot deck and I was ready to begin. Things were great initially. My readings were very accurate and I was growing confident day by day. The only problem that I realized after about a year was that I didn’t know the name of my deck. The deck only had the word ‘Tarot’ written on it. And the other problem I faced (it didn’t seem like a problem at that time since I was in school and we were so used to cramming for exams) was that I literally mugged up the meanings of the cards from the books and was quoting the book like a parrot! And I thought I was a great reader!  Things dawned to me much later on that the meanings of the books were not cast in stone. The way I looked at the tarot changed dramatically when I finally purchased the Rider Waite deck. That’s when I realized my original deck had eaten up all the symbols and the pip cards specially had no pictures, just 10 swords  or 5 cups placed on the card.

 Only after I bought the Rider Waite did things start making sense to me. I had heard of this deck, but never bought it because I was so stubborn and hell bent that I was right and that I was an amazing tarot reader that I couldn’t be less bothered about what other people out there were doing. I was just like The Fool, ignorant, and innocent and on my own merry trip. This brings me to the question, "Should one learn tarot on their own or join a class and learn from a teacher?"

In these 12 years, I have always wondered if I would’ve been better off if I had learnt tarot from a professional. Today, when I see the smiling face of my tarot students,  I realize the answer. When I was their age, I was confused but too scared to admit it. When you’re all on your own, you begin to doubt your abilities and I went through a phase where I didn’t believe in myself. When you learn on your own, there are so many tarot decks and books out there that it is difficult to choose the right one. There are so many authors who believe in different things- some do reverses and some don’t, some don’t do readings at night or when they’re sick and some claim to have the best readings when they’re sick and dazed! All this can be confusing to a beginner. Half of these books would scare away an amateur. To learn anything, you must seek the help of a guide because half knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge.  

From my own experience, I feel the first step is very crucial. Initially I was so frustrated that I wanted to give up tarot all together and my deck would gather dust for months. This was all because I was too stubborn to ask for help and thought that I could do it by myself. I eventually managed on my own, but what I learnt in 3 years, I could’ve learnt in 3 months with correct guidance.  Today, I have no regrets but my experience has made me help many tarot beginners. I have also started teaching tarot to stop people from making the same mistakes that I had made. One just needs to know the basics, and then from there the real journey begins, like the Fool’s journey. 

While learning and exploring the tarot, we explore our inner selves and that cannot be learnt from anywhere. Once you receive the gift, it is up to you how you use it. You could either nurture it and make it grow or you could forget about it and keep it locked in a cupboard. Tarot is simple because it is something we already know, it’s a part of our subconscious and the archetypes are part of the collective subconscious. Once we know that, its so much easier from there and it becomes our best friend.  

The tarot teaches us that the innocence of the Fool should be balanced by the wisdom of the Hermit. Only when he shines his bright light upon us, can we be truly enlightened.  The  Hermit guides those who are lost and confused and brings them on the right path and shows them the way.

Amy Winehouse (1983-2011)

For those who are unfamiliar with her, Amy Winehouse was an English singing artist who died on July 23, 2011 at a very young age of 27. Though the exact reason of death is not known, we can assume that it was because of her excessive use of drugs, alcohol and cigarattes. Some people say it was a violent death. She was admitted to rehab many times due to her self-abusive behavior , drug and alcohol abuse. While this was her dark side, she also had another side: that of a genius and a record-breaking artist winning five Grammy awards.

Amy Winehouse was born on September 14, 2011 making her a Virgo. It’s strange that she has ‘Wine’ in her name suggesting an attraction to alcohol. This negative side of her nature reminds me of The Devil card in the Tarot- the card of materialism, getting trapped in a world of fame. Numerologically, she is a Number 5 and Number 14. Such people through they have great communication, they are highly critical of others and themselves. At some level, she probably felt she did not match up to her own expectations.  14 is the number of ‘Magnetic communication’ with the public. The number 14 person should rely on the intuition, the self, and the voice within, not on the word of others. There is also a danger of loss due to wrong advice from others or overconfidence.  Winehouse was introduced to drugs by her boyfriend, a wrong piece of advice which costed her life.

Number 4 people are often misunderstood by people and don't believe in following the rules of society which is so true in Amy's case. Rowling and Roald Dahl ( also Number 4's). Number 13 is said to be a number of incredible power which if misused will bring destruction upon itself.  Also Number 43 which is just the numerology of 'Winehouse' is a highly unfortunate number symbolized by war, upheavel, strife and conflict and carries the vibration of disappointment and failure. It's sad that her name 'Amy' which is a wonderful Number 6 was not able to help her, as personally she had great creativity and love for art and music.

The Devil, as I mentioned earlier had to come up in the reading - the card of materialism, drugs, alcohol and negative influences trapping you from inside. She herself is a simple person who wanted to experience life to its fullest, and was bored with routine shown in the 4 of Cups, and wanted to escape. She had a close friend who was a good influence who spent a lot of time with her. The end result is the Ace of Pentacles. I usually feel that Ace cards or The Fool card signifies death, but thats just me. For her it's a new beginning, a new start, a new birth, a new chance to prove herself.

When we succeed after strife, our joy will be much more and we will know the true value of our success.

Today I have also drawn out a very spiritual card, the High Priestess. She is the wise one, the one who knows. She is within all of us in the form of our intuition and our inner voice of guidance. She is a part of our consciousness if we look deep within. We must listen to what she has to say follow her wise advice otherwise we will no longer be able to hear her. The High Priestess also signifies the perfect woman in your life. So, you could also be interacting with or meeting your soulmate today.Also, listen to what she has to say and heed her advice as it will be very helpful for you.  If you are a woman, you should listen to your own inner voice or intuition and also pay attention to signs that you may receive. You may wear a moonstone to increase your ability to connect with your high priestess.

The Taurean will be found in a bank, in a real-estate office, or anywhere else. He could belong to any profession, but he'll always be the strong, silent type. An Introduction to Astrology

I'm sure most of you must be aware about astrology. From among all the new age sciences, it is the most well-known. On the next day of the terrible blasts hitting the city of Mumbai drew a very interesting and encouraging card for all of us. I intuitively picked up the Angel Therapy oracle cards deck assuming that we all need some form of therapy after hearing stories of the blasts. The atmosphere is definitely saddening and we know we have to move on with our lives, but yet we can not help but feel sad and also guilty about being alive, when so many others are dead or are in pain at this moment. The Card which I drew today is Medium ship. Medium ship is the ability to communicate and speak with the dead - this is a natural ability which we all share. They do want to communicate with us, and we need not be afraid because they just want to bless us or tell us that they are happy and okay. This is reassuring to us as they are happy and not in pain when they have departed to the higher realms. So we need not feel guilty, as they will always be connected to us. 

Mediumship is very simple. You need to trust your feelings, thoughts and visions because they are REAL. This is healing for us as they can send us peaceful messages. You could hear or feel "I love you" or "I'm fine" or "I'm proud of you" or "I'm sorry" and other such compassionate words. Medium ship is a noble mission that can help thousands of people. The angels support and guide you along the way. 

In a quiet room, where you won't be disturbed, have a conversation with a departed loved one using a pen and paper. Call upon Archangel Michael to oversee this as he is the angel of protection. Next, write to your loved one and write what ever thoughts, feelings or visions appear to you. At times it may feel like you don't understand what you're writing. Let it go. After you're done, read what you have written. It will be a beautiful answer for you. We could all do this exercise today and try and connect to the people who have passed away in the blasts. We could give them reassurance that everyone is praying for them and deeply regret whatever has happened. We could tell them to be peaceful and not angry about what has happened.
